What is google_product_category?
google_product_category is the feed attribute that tells Google which entry in its product taxonomy a product belongs to. It is optional — Google assigns a category to every product automatically — but when you send it, it must be a real taxonomy value, and in a few specific cases it is the value Google uses.
What this comes down to
- It takes one value from Google’s taxonomy: the numeric ID or the full path, not both. Google recommends the ID.
- It is optional. Leaving it out does not cause a disapproval; Google uses internal signals to assign a category.
- An invalid value is rejected and may prevent the product from appearing.
- It overrides Google’s automatic category only in specific cases, including category-specific attribute rules and Google Ads targeting.
What the attribute accepts
The value is one entry from the Google product taxonomy — currently 5,595 categories. You can send either the category ID, such as 209, or the category path, such as Apparel & Accessories > Clothing > Underwear & Socks > Socks. Google’s product data specification says to send one or the other, not both, and recommends the ID.
Only one category is allowed per product. A product that could sit in two places goes in the one that describes what it is, and the other angle belongs in your own product_type, which accepts any text you like.
Optional, but not ignored
Google’s documentation lists the attribute as optional and says every product is assigned a category automatically. If you omit it, Google uses internal signals to decide. That is why a missing value does not disapprove a product — there is no “missing google_product_category” error to fix.
What Google does say is that it accepts your value as an override in specific cases: to enforce category-specific attribute requirements, to target Google Ads campaigns, and for alcohol. A handful of product types must also be submitted to particular categories — gift cards to ID 53, for example. The guide on products that must use a specific category lists them.
Where else the value is used
The same column travels. Meta’s catalog documentation defines google_product_category against Google’s taxonomy file, and Microsoft Advertising accepts the Google-formatted attribute alongside its own equivalent field. One correct value in a multi-channel feed does work in more than one place — see Meta catalogs and Microsoft Advertising.
To find the value for one product, paste its title into the Category Finder. For a whole catalog, the Bulk Mapper returns one ID per row plus a confidence score.
Questions
Is google_product_category required?
No. Google lists it as optional and assigns a category to every product automatically. Products using subscription_cost are the documented exception: for those, the attribute must be present.
Should I send the ID or the path?
Either is accepted, but not both in the same value. Google’s product data specification recommends the numeric ID, which is also shorter and does not break when a path is written with a different ampersand or spacing.
