Google product category, platform by platform
The same attribute is written in different places and read by different channels. Here is where the value lives on each store platform, what each ad channel does with it, and how to set it for a whole catalog at once.
One value, four places it matters
- Set it in the storeShopify has a Google category column in its product CSV; on WooCommerce it is product meta added by your feed extension.
- Send it in the feedThe value leaves in google_product_category, as an ID or a full path. Google recommends the ID.
- Correct it on the sideWhere a primary feed is hard to edit, a supplemental data source can carry id and google_product_category alone, matched on product id.
- Reuse it across channelsMeta reads the same attribute against Google’s taxonomy file; Microsoft accepts the Google-formatted field alongside its own.
Store platforms — where you set it
- Google product category on ShopifyTwo category columns, two taxonomies. Filling Shopify’s does not fill Google’s, and a blank cell on re-import erases it.Product category is Shopify’s taxonomy; Google Shopping / Google Product Category is Google’s. Both are in Shopify’s CSV template.
- Google product category on WooCommerceCore WooCommerce has no Google feed. The category is extension meta: invisible to category editors, reachable by CSV round-trip.WooCommerce core has no Google feed; the attribute comes from whichever feed extension you use.
Ad channels — where it is read
- Google product category in Meta catalogsMeta’s catalog reads the same attribute against Google’s taxonomy file, so one correct value serves both channels.Meta defines google_product_category against Google’s taxonomy and links to Google’s file.
- Google product category on Microsoft AdvertisingMicrosoft reads the Google-formatted attribute and also defines its own equivalent field, which takes Microsoft’s taxonomy, not Google’s.googleProductCategory accepts a category string or a category ID, limited to 255 characters.
At a glance
| Platform | Role | What to know first |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify | Sets the value | Two category columns, two taxonomies. Filling Shopify’s does not fill Google’s, and a blank cell on re-import erases it. |
| WooCommerce | Sets the value | Core WooCommerce has no Google feed. The category is extension meta: invisible to category editors, reachable by CSV round-trip. |
| Meta (Facebook & Instagram) | Reads the value | Meta’s catalog reads the same attribute against Google’s taxonomy file, so one correct value serves both channels. |
| Microsoft Advertising | Reads the value | Microsoft reads the Google-formatted attribute and also defines its own equivalent field, which takes Microsoft’s taxonomy, not Google’s. |
Questions
Can one set of category IDs serve every channel?
Largely, yes. Meta defines google_product_category against Google’s taxonomy file, and Microsoft accepts the Google-formatted attribute. Keep Microsoft’s own product_category field separate — it uses Microsoft’s taxonomy.
Why are BigCommerce and Magento not listed?
Each page here is written from the platform’s own documentation, and these four are the ones checked so far. A platform is added when its behaviour has been verified, not before.
