Products that must use a specific Google product category

google_product_category is optional for almost everything — but a few kinds of product may only be submitted to particular categories: gift cards, phones and tablets sold on a contract, physical goods sold as a subscription, and alcohol. Products with a subscription_cost are the one case where the attribute itself must be present. This guide lists each rule with the exact IDs.

What this comes down to

  • Gift cards go in category 53, Gift Cards & Certificates.
  • Phones and tablets sold with a contract or instalments are limited to a short list of categories, led by 267 Mobile Phones and 4745 Tablet Computers.
  • Products using subscription_cost must include google_product_category, and physical subscriptions are limited to named categories.
  • Alcohol belongs in 499676 Alcoholic Beverages or its subcategories, or 3577 for homebrewing supplies.
  • A bundle takes the category of its main product.

Optional attribute, restricted values

Google lists google_product_category as optional and assigns a category to every product automatically. None of that changes below. What changes is that for certain products, Google’s product data specification says they must be submitted to only certain categories — if you send a value, it has to be one of these.

These are also the cases where the category you send carries weight: Google says it accepts a category override to enforce category-specific attribute requirements, to target Google Ads campaigns, and for alcohol. Sending the right ID for these products is not decoration.

The attribute is optional. For these products, the choice of value is not.

Gift cards

Gift cards and gift certificates go in one category:

Gift card category
IDPath
53Arts & Entertainment > Party & Celebration > Gift Giving > Gift Cards & Certificates

A card that can only be spent in your store is still a gift card for this purpose. Do not file it under the products it can buy.

Phones and tablets sold on a contract

Devices sold with a wireless contract or an instalment plan are limited to the following categories. Where the price you submit is zero because the cost is in the contract, Google requires category 267.

Categories allowed for contract devices
IDPath
267Electronics > Communications > Telephony > Mobile Phones
4745Electronics > Computers > Tablet Computers
201Apparel & Accessories > Jewelry > Watches
6030Electronics > Communications > Telephony > Mobile Phone Accessories > Mobile Phone Pre-Paid Cards & SIM Cards
6544Electronics > GPS Tracking Devices

Microsoft Shopping has a parallel rule: a price of 0 is only accepted for Mobile Phones or Tablet Computers with a keyword such as “contract” in the title — see the Microsoft Advertising page.

Physical goods sold as a subscription

If a product carries the subscription_cost attribute, Google’s specification says google_product_category must be present. It is the only place the attribute itself is required. Physical products sold as a subscription are limited to these categories:

Categories allowed for physical subscriptions
IDPath
2915Health & Beauty > Personal Care
491Health & Beauty > Health Care
536Home & Garden
2Animals & Pet Supplies > Pet Supplies
1253Toys & Games > Toys
5814Food, Beverages & Tobacco > Food Items > Prepared Foods
166Apparel & Accessories
1868Food, Beverages & Tobacco > Beverages > Coffee

Several of these are top-level or near-top branches, such as 536 Home & Garden. That is not a mistake to correct with a deeper category: the list is what Google names. Subscription software is its own case and uses 313, Software > Computer Software.

Alcohol

Alcohol is one of the three cases where Google says it accepts your category as an override, and it can only be submitted to particular categories:

  • 499676 — Food, Beverages & Tobacco > Beverages > Alcoholic Beverages, or one of its subcategories;
  • 3577 — Arts & Entertainment > Hobbies & Creative Arts > Homebrewing & Winemaking Supplies, for supplies rather than drinks.

The attribute’s requirement level is still listed as optional; what the documentation constrains is where alcohol may go if you send a category, alongside Google’s separate alcohol policies. Pick the most specific subcategory under 499676 that is true of the drink — the category index lists them.

Bundles

A bundle — a main product sold with accessories, like a camera with a lens and a bag — takes the category of the main product. The accessories do not earn it a second category, and a generic “gift set” branch is not the answer when one item in the set is clearly the point of the purchase.

This is where automatic classification struggles most, because a bundle’s title names several products. The Category Finder reports a low confidence and the runner-up when two items compete, which is your cue to decide which one is the main product.

Checking a whole catalog for these cases

In a large catalog the risk is not that you do not know the rule; it is that a gift card or a contract phone is filed under something else and nobody notices. Run the catalog through the Bulk Mapper and filter full.csv for these IDs, and for titles that mention gift cards, contracts, subscriptions or alcohol but landed elsewhere.
