What is in each file
The same columns in all three formats. In the JSON file the levels are an array.
| Column | What it holds |
|---|---|
id | Google’s numeric category ID. This is the value for google_product_category. |
name | The category’s own name, the last level of the path. |
path | The full path, levels joined with " > ", exactly as Google writes it. |
depth | 1 for a top-level category, up to the deepest level in the list. |
parent_id | The ID of the category one level up. Empty for top-level categories. |
is_leaf | true when the category has no subcategories. |
level_1, level_2, … | Each level of the path in its own column, so you can filter without splitting text. |
The first rows
| id | path | parent_id | is_leaf |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Animals & Pet Supplies | false | |
| 3237 | Animals & Pet Supplies > Live Animals | 1 | true |
| 2 | Animals & Pet Supplies > Pet Supplies | 1 | false |
| 3 | Animals & Pet Supplies > Pet Supplies > Bird Supplies | 2 | false |
| 7385 | Animals & Pet Supplies > Pet Supplies > Bird Supplies > Bird Cage Accessories | 3 | false |
| 499954 | Animals & Pet Supplies > Pet Supplies > Bird Supplies > Bird Cage Accessories > Bird Cage Bird Baths | 7385 | true |
How these differ from Google’s own files
Google publishes the list as taxonomy-with-ids.en-US.txt and an .xls version, both under www.google.com/basepages/producttype/. The text file is one line per category, an ID, a space, a hyphen, a space and the path. It is not a CSV: hundreds of category names contain commas, and some contain hyphens, so splitting it by hand goes wrong in quiet ways.
These files are converted from that text file. The rows, names, IDs and order are Google’s. What is added is only what can be read off the path: the depth, the parent ID, whether a category has children, and the levels as separate columns. The CSV starts with a byte-order mark so Excel on Windows shows the characters correctly.
If you would rather take the list straight from Google, the guide to the official list names each file and how to open it.
Using the list in a product feed
Put the number from the id column into google_product_category. Choose the deepest category that truly describes the product; a leaf category tells Google the most. The attribute is optional and Google assigns a category on its own, so a value you send is a signal, not a guaranteed override.
Scrolling 5,595 rows for each product is slow. The Category Finder suggests the category and ID for one product title, free, and the Bulk Mapper does a whole catalog from a CSV or XLSX export.

Questions
Is the download free, and do I need an account?
Yes, it is free and there is no sign-up. The links on this page are plain files.
Is this the latest Google product taxonomy?
It is built from the file Google serves at https://www.google.com/basepages/producttype/taxonomy-with-ids.en-US.txt, captured on 2026-09-19. That file carries Google’s version date 2021-09-21, which is the newest version Google had published when it was captured.
Does Google publish the taxonomy as a CSV?
No. Google publishes a text file and an .xls spreadsheet. The CSV here is converted from Google’s text file, with names that contain commas quoted so they do not split into extra columns.
Are the category names or IDs changed in any way?
No. Every ID, name and path is Google’s, in Google’s order. The added columns (depth, parent_id, is_leaf and the level columns) are derived from the path and nothing else.
Which value goes into my product feed?
The number in the id column, in the google_product_category attribute. Google accepts the ID or the full path, and the ID is shorter and survives translation.
Is there a version in other languages?
These files are English (en-US). Google publishes translated lists such as de-DE, fr-FR and ja-JP at the same address with the locale changed. The IDs are the same in every language, so a file keyed by ID works for every country.
Need the IDs for a whole catalog?
Upload your export and get a supplemental feed back with an ID on every row.
