A sentence of detail is what separates near-identical sibling categories.

What the ID is actually for

Merchant Center

google_product_category in your primary or supplemental feed accepts the number. Submitting the ID avoids the whole class of typos that path text invites.

Shopping policy

Some categories carry their own requirements and restrictions. Knowing which one a product sits in tells you which rules apply to it.

Reporting

Performance breakdowns group by category. A catalog scattered across the wrong categories produces reports you cannot act on.

Why sellers use it

It gives you the number, not just the path

Merchant Center reads a numeric ID in the google_product_category column. You get that ID, so you paste the value the feed validates against instead of retyping a path and inviting a typo.

A confidence score you can act on

Every result says how sure it is and shows the runner-up categories. A close call between two siblings reads as a close call, so you know which answers to trust and which to check.

Free, with nothing to sign up for

No account and no card. Paste a title, read the answer, and move on. The taxonomy behind it is a versioned snapshot of Google’s own, named on the page.

It shows the whole path, not one label

You see where the category sits in the tree — its parents and where it branches — so you can tell a specific category from the broad one above it before you commit.

Where it stops

The honest limits, so nothing about the tool surprises you later.

  • It reads the title, not the product

It works from the words you paste. A vague or keyword-stuffed title returns a low-confidence answer; a clear title with a short description returns a good one. It cannot see your photos or attributes.

  • A suggestion, not a submission

It hands you the ID and the path. Putting them into Merchant Center is still your step — nothing on your account is touched.

  • One product at a time

For a whole catalog, the Bulk Mapper runs the same classification across every row and flags the ones worth checking by hand.

Questions

What is a Google product category ID?

It is the numeric identifier for one entry in Google's product taxonomy — 2271 is "Apparel & Accessories > Clothing > Shirts & Tops". Merchant Center accepts either the number or the full path text in the google_product_category attribute, and the number is harder to get wrong.

Do I have to set the category myself?

Usually no. Google assigns a category automatically from your product data, and for most products that assignment is correct. Setting it yourself matters when the automatic guess is wrong, when the category drives a policy or a shopping surface you need, or when you are supplying data Google cannot infer.

Should I pick the most specific category available?

Pick the most specific category that is still true. A running shoe belongs in the running-shoe category; a shoe you cannot identify further belongs in the parent. Google accepts parent categories, and an accurate parent beats a confident wrong leaf.

How accurate is this?

It reads the title and any detail you add, walks the taxonomy one level at a time, and keeps several candidate paths alive so an ambiguous first step can still recover. Every answer comes with a confidence score, and anything below the review threshold is flagged rather than presented as certain. Adding a sentence of description is the single biggest accuracy improvement you can make.

Is there a limit?

20 lookups a day per address, free, no account. Past that the Bulk Mapper handles whole catalogs on prepaid credits and has no per-day cap.

Got more than a handful of products?

Upload the catalog. Get a supplemental feed back, plus a separate file of the rows worth checking.
