Analyze Steam reviews
Steam has no review download, not even in Steamworks. The official route is the public appreviews endpoint, which needs no API key and returns up to 100 reviews per request.
Free, no account. The label set starts on Mobile app, which is the one that fits Steam. Swap it or add your own above.

Getting the file
- 01Find the game’s app ID: it is the number in its store URL, store.steampowered.com/app/<id>/.
- 02Request store.steampowered.com/appreviews/<id>?json=1&filter=recent&language=all&purchase_type=all&num_per_page=100&cursor=*
- 03Repeat with the cursor value each response returns, URL-encoded, until a response comes back with no reviews.
- 04Write the review, voted_up and timestamp_created fields to a CSV, converting the timestamp to an ISO date.
Before you trust the file
A file in hand is not the same as an answer. Below is what Steam's export leaves out, what to do when it is not enough, and how its columns line up with the three the analyzer needs.
What to watch for
- purchase_type defaults to steam, which leaves out reviews from keys bought elsewhere. Pass purchase_type=all if you want every review.
- Off-topic review bombs are filtered out by default. Pass filter_offtopic_activity=0 to keep them.
- Page with filter=recent or filter=updated. The default filter=all sorts by helpfulness inside a day_range window, so paging through it is not a way to get every review.
- A Steam review is a recommendation, voted_up true or false, not a star rating. There is no 1 to 5 score to map.
- Valve’s API terms do not allow presenting Steam data so that it looks endorsed by or affiliated with Valve or Steam.
If that does not work
If you are not going to script it, copy the reviews you can see on the store page and paste them here. Thirty at a time is free and needs no account.
Mapping the columns
Map review as the text and your converted ISO date as the date. Leave the rating unmapped: voted_up is true or false, and the analyzer only reads a 1 to 5 scale.

What the analyzer looks for in Steam reviews
Each review is checked against every label separately, and a label is attached when its probability is 0.65 or higher — so one review can be about two topics at once. The definitions below are the ones the model is given, word for word.
- Bugs & crashes
- The reviewer reports the app crashing, freezing, failing to load, losing data, or behaving incorrectly.
- Performance
- The reviewer comments on speed, lag, battery drain, storage use, or data use. Slowness without an outright failure belongs here rather than under bugs.
- UI & usability
- The reviewer comments on the interface or how easy the app is to use — layout, navigation, confusing flows, visual design, accessibility.
- Pricing & subscription
- The reviewer comments on cost, in-app purchases, a subscription, a free trial, a paywall, or being charged unexpectedly.
- Feature request
- The reviewer asks for something the app does not currently do, or asks for a removed capability back.
- Login & account
- The reviewer describes trouble signing in, signing up, verifying, resetting a password, syncing across devices, or deleting an account.
- Ads
- The reviewer comments on advertising in the app — frequency, placement, intrusiveness, or unskippable video.
- Support
- The reviewer describes contacting the developer or support team, or not getting a reply.
How severity is scored
Severity rates the problem, not the wording. Reviews at 4 or above are counted as urgent.
- 1Positive or neutral feedback. Nothing is wrong and nothing needs fixing.
- 2A minor gripe stated in passing. The reviewer is broadly satisfied and would buy again.
- 3A real problem that annoyed the reviewer but did not stop them using what they bought.
- 4A significant problem: the item or app did not do what they needed, or they wasted real time or money on it.
- 5A severe problem. The reviewer was harmed, lost money they have not recovered, is warning other buyers off, or reports a safety or data issue.
What you get back
A summary counted in code — the sentiment split, topics ordered by how many negative or mixed reviews they hold, and three real quotes per topic — plus two downloads:
reviews-analyzed.csv— one row per review with 10 fixed columns, then a decision and a probability for every label.review-summary.json— the same summary the page shows, for your own reporting.- A needs-a-reply flag on each review, set when its probability is 0.5 or more, so the customers still waiting are not lost in the counts.
Questions about Steam reviews
Can I export my Steam reviews?
Steam has no review download, not even in Steamworks. The official route is the public appreviews endpoint, which needs no API key and returns up to 100 reviews per request.
What if I cannot get a file out of Steam?
If you are not going to script it, copy the reviews you can see on the store page and paste them here. Thirty at a time is free and needs no account.
Which columns should I map?
Map review as the text and your converted ISO date as the date. Leave the rating unmapped: voted_up is true or false, and the analyzer only reads a 1 to 5 scale.
How many Steam reviews can I analyze for free?
Up to 30 pasted reviews per run, with no account. Larger files use prepaid credits, one per review, and the first reviews of any upload are previewed free.
Can I add my own topics?
Yes. Add up to 10 custom labels alongside the Mobile app preset. Each one is asked as its own question, so it is counted the same way as a built-in label.
After the analysis
- How to prioritise negative reviews by severityNot every one-star review is urgent. Rank complaints by severity and how often they recur, so the fix list starts with what actually hurts.
- How to analyze thousands of customer reviews without reading them allTurning a pile of free-text reviews into counts you can act on: topics, severity, and the difference between a loud complaint and a common one.
- How to export product reviewsPlatform by platform: which stores offer a real review export, which do not, and what to do when there is no official route to your reviews.

All eight platforms, side by side
Every one was checked against its own documentation. The route is the finding, and the counts are how much there was to say about it. Two of the eight have no way out at all, which is worth knowing before you go looking.
