What is a leaf category?

A leaf category is an entry with nothing beneath it: the most specific place in its branch. Every entry in the taxonomy, leaf or not, is a valid value — but the more specific the category, the more precisely rules and targeting that depend on it can apply.

What this comes down to

  • Leaves are the ends of branches; parents are the categories that have children.
  • Parent categories are valid values too — the whole file is the valid list.
  • Specific categories carry more information for category-based rules and targeting.
  • When a product genuinely spans subcategories, a parent can be the accurate choice.

Leaves, parents and depth

The taxonomy is a tree up to seven levels deep. Apparel & Accessories > Clothing > Underwear & Socks > Socks is a leaf: nothing sits under Socks. Apparel & Accessories > Clothing is a parent with many children. Branches end at different depths, so a leaf can be at level two in one branch and level seven in another.

How the Category Finder decides where to stop

The Category Finder walks the tree one level at a time, keeping the three best paths alive at each step. It normally ends on a leaf. When no child of the current category is a convincing fit — a “gift set” with mixed contents, say — it stops on the parent and says so, rather than forcing a guess one level deeper.

That stop is reported with the confidence score, so a parent-level answer arrives flagged for review instead of pretending to be precise.

Choosing between a leaf and its parent

Ask what the product is, not what it is sold with. A pair of wool socks belongs in Socks, the leaf; a multipack of socks, tights and leggings has no single leaf that is true of all of it, and Underwear & Socks is the honest answer. Going deeper than the product supports is not more precise — it is just wrong in more detail.

Questions

Does Google require a leaf category?

Google’s documentation lists the whole taxonomy as valid values and does not say a value must be a leaf. Being specific does help wherever category-based rules or targeting apply.

What if my product fits two leaves?

Only one category is allowed per product. Choose the one describing what the product is. Bundles use the category of the main item.
