No Google product category fits your product? What to do instead
When no Google product category fits, walk up the tree to the deepest level that is still true and use that. A broader category that is right beats a specific one that is wrong. Put the precise description in product_type, which is yours to define, and leave google_product_category empty only if even the top level is uncertain; Google then assigns one itself.
What this comes down to
- Use the deepest category that is still true, even if it is broader than you would like.
- A specific category that is wrong is worse than a broad one that is right, because it can bring the wrong attribute requirements.
- Carry the precise description in product_type, which you define yourself and which Google Ads can use for bidding and reporting.
- The list has not changed since 2021-09-21, so products that became common since then may have no category of their own.
Why so many products have no exact match
The taxonomy has 5,595 categories, and the version Google publishes is dated 2021-09-21. Two things follow. It was never meant to name every product: it is a classification, not a catalog. And anything that became common after 2021 has had no chance to get its own entry.
So not finding your product’s exact name is normal. It does not mean you are searching badly, and it does not mean the product cannot be categorised.
Broad and true beats specific and wrong.
Walk up the tree until it is true
Take a desk converter, the frame that sits on a desk and raises a laptop to standing height. There is no category with that name. Two candidates look close:
| ID | Category | True for this product? |
|---|---|---|
| 4191 | Furniture > Office Furniture > Desks | No: it is not a desk; it sits on one |
| 503766 | Furniture > Office Furniture Accessories > Desk Parts & Accessories | Yes: it is an accessory for a desk |
The first sounds closer, and it is wrong. The second is less exciting and correct. If even that had not fit, the next step up, Office Furniture Accessories (503765), would still have been true. That is the method: at each level, ask is this product one of these?
and stop at the deepest yes.
Why a wrong specific category costs more
Some categories carry their own rules. Apparel, for example, brings required color, size, gender and age group attributes in six countries, and a few kinds of product may only be submitted to particular categories. Put a product in a category it does not belong to, and you can inherit requirements that make no sense for it, or break a rule meant for something else.
The reverse temptation is just as risky: do not choose a category to avoid its requirements. If the product is apparel, it belongs in apparel.
Put the precision in product_type
product_type is the attribute you define yourself. Google describes it as the product category that you define, allows up to 750 characters, and suggests the full path, for example Home > Office > Standing Desk Converters. Only the first value you submit is used to organise bidding and reporting in Shopping campaigns.
So the two attributes split the work: google_product_category says where the product sits in Google’s list, truthfully and perhaps broadly; product_type says exactly what it is, in your words. The comparison guide covers the difference in full.
When to leave it empty
If you cannot say with confidence which top-level category a product belongs to, leave the category empty. That is allowed: Google says that if the attribute is not provided, it will use internal signals to determine the category. An empty value is better than a guess you cannot defend.
For a catalog full of awkward products, the Bulk Mapper suggests a category for every row and flags the ones it is unsure about, so you spend your judgement on the hard rows only.
Questions
What if my product does not fit any Google product category?
Use the deepest category that is still true, even if it is broad, and describe the product precisely in product_type. If even the top level is uncertain, leave the category empty and Google will assign one.
Is it better to choose a close category or leave it blank?
A true category, even a broad one, is a value you control and can target in Google Ads. A category that is close but wrong is worse than blank, because it can bring requirements that do not apply to your product.
Can I request a new Google product category?
We have not found any documented way to request a new category. The published list still carries the version date 2021-09-21, so work with the nearest true category.
