When to recheck your Google product categories: seven moments that matter
Recheck your Google product categories when something changes, not on a calendar: when you add products, change what a product is, see a category issue in Merchant Center, start selling in a new country, switch platform or feed app, before you build campaigns by category, and when Google publishes a new taxonomy version. Between those events, a category that was right stays right.
What this comes down to
- A correct category does not decay on its own; it goes stale when the product, the catalog, the country or the tooling changes.
- New products are the most common gap: categories get set once for the launch catalog and never for what came after.
- Imports and app switches can wipe or orphan category values, so check them the same day as the change.
- Selling in a new country can bring new requirements tied to the category, such as the apparel attributes Google lists.
Check on events, not on a schedule
A quarterly review all categories
task sounds responsible, and it tends to be skipped, because nothing seems wrong. The categories themselves do not change: the published list has carried the same version date, 2021-09-21, for five years. What changes is everything around them.
So tie the check to the moments that actually break things. Here are seven, with the size of the check each one needs.
Categories do not go bad. The catalog around them moves.
Seven moments to recheck
| Moment | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| New products or a new range | Nobody categorised them | Only the new rows |
| A product changes what it is | A bag redesigned as a backpack belongs somewhere else | That product and its variants |
| A category issue in Merchant Center | Google says invalid values will be rejected | The flagged products |
| Selling in a new country | Some attribute requirements depend on country and category | Categories with extra requirements, such as apparel |
| Platform, app or bulk import change | Values can be cleared or left in the old tool | A sample of products, the same day |
| Before building campaigns by category | Broad categories make broad product groups | How specific your categories are |
| A new taxonomy version | IDs may be added or removed | The IDs your feed uses |
The most common one: products added after launch
Most catalogs get categorised once, carefully, when the feed is first set up. Then new products arrive one or five at a time, through a form or an import, and the category field is the one nobody fills. A year later, a growing share of the catalog has no category of its own, and Google is assigning one automatically.
The fix is a habit rather than a project: add set the Google category to the new-product checklist. For a batch, run just the new rows through the Bulk Mapper; for one product, paste its title into the free Category Finder.
Imports and app switches: check the same day
This is the moment with the biggest downside. Shopify’s documentation warns that a blank non-required column in an import file overwrites the stored value as blank, so a re-import of a trimmed spreadsheet can clear every category at once. Switching feed apps can leave values behind in the old one.
Check a sample of ten products in Merchant Center the day after any bulk change. If the values are gone, restore them from your backup file of product id and category ID; the guide on where to keep categories explains that file.
New countries: requirements that follow the category
Some requirements depend on both the category and the country. Google’s product data specification requires color, size, gender and age group for apparel targeted at Brazil, France, Germany, Japan, the UK and the US. And in Performance Max, subdividing listing groups by category only works in twelve countries Google lists.
Before launching in a new country, list which of your categories carry extra requirements there, and check those products first.
Questions
How often should I review my Google product categories?
Check when something changes rather than on a fixed schedule: new products, a changed product, a Merchant Center issue, a new country, a platform or app change, new campaigns by category, or a new taxonomy version.
Why did my Google product categories disappear?
The usual cause is a bulk import or app change. On Shopify, a blank non-required column in an import file overwrites the stored value as blank. Restore from a backup of product id and category ID.
Do I need to recategorise when I sell in a new country?
The category ID stays the same across countries, but some requirements depend on country and category, such as the apparel attributes Google requires in six countries. Check those products first.
