What is Google Merchant Center?

Google Merchant Center is where a store’s product data lives for Google: titles, prices, availability, images and optional attributes such as google_product_category. Data arrives through data sources — a primary source that defines the products, and optional supplemental sources that add or change attributes.

What this comes down to

  • Products enter through a primary data source; supplemental sources only modify them.
  • Each product is identified by its id, which supplemental data must match exactly.
  • Category is one optional attribute among many; Google assigns one if you do not.
  • Supplemental sources need the “Advanced data source management” add-on to appear.

Data sources

A primary data source — a file, a Google Sheet, an API connection or a platform app — defines which products exist. A supplemental data source cannot add or remove products; it adds or overrides attributes on products the primary source already has, matched by product ID.

That split is what makes category fixes practical: you can supply google_product_category from a separate sheet without touching the feed your store platform generates.

Where categories fit

Every product gets a category automatically. Your own google_product_category value is used in specific cases — category-specific attribute rules, Google Ads targeting, alcohol — and some products must use particular categories. An invalid value is rejected and may prevent the product from appearing, which Merchant Center reports as an “Invalid product category” issue.

What Merchant Center reports about categories

The category issue Google documents is “Invalid product category”: a value that is not one of the predefined taxonomy entries. There is no matching article for a missing category, because a product without one is assigned a category automatically. When the invalid-category issue appears, the cause is almost always systematic — one import rule or app writing the wrong text into every product — so fix the source as well as the rows.

The step-by-step repair is in how to fix an invalid product category.

Questions

Does Merchant Center disapprove products without a category?

No. The attribute is optional and Google assigns a category automatically. Invalid category values are the problem Google documents, not missing ones.

Can I change categories without editing my store?

Yes, with a supplemental data source keyed by product ID. The walkthrough is in the guide on overriding Google’s automatic category.
