Where the Google product category shows up in Google Ads
In Google Ads, the product category is one of the attributes you can split a Shopping campaign’s product groups by, alongside brand, item ID, product type, condition, custom labels and channel. Performance Max listing groups can use it too, but only when the campaign targets one of twelve countries Google lists. Ads reads the category from Merchant Center, and if you do not submit one, Google says it might assign one for you.
What this comes down to
- Shopping campaigns can split product groups by category, next to brand, item ID, product type, condition, custom labels and channel.
- Google Ads reads the category from Merchant Center, and if you send none, Google says it might assign one for you.
- Performance Max can subdivide listing groups by category only when the campaign targets one of twelve countries Google names.
- A broad category gives you broad groups; the more specific the category, the finer you can split products for bidding.
Standard Shopping: product groups
A Shopping campaign organises your Merchant Center products into product groups, and you set bids on them. Google’s help page lists the attributes you can subdivide a group by:
- Category, organised by the levels of the Google product taxonomy
- Product type, your own categories, subdivided up to five times
- Brand, item ID and condition
- Custom labels, up to five that you define (see custom label)
- Channel and channel exclusivity: whether a product sells online, in local stores, or both
Each ad group can hold up to 5,000 product groups.
Performance Max: listing groups, with a country catch
Performance Max calls them listing groups and offers the same kinds of attribute. The catch is in one sentence of Google’s help page: you can only subdivide by category when you target the US, the UK, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, Brazil, Norway, Sweden or Turkey.
Selling elsewhere, the category option will not be there, and product type or custom labels have to do the grouping. Each asset group can have up to 1,000 listing groups.
Where the category value comes from
Google Ads does not ask you for a category; it reads the one Merchant Center holds. Google’s product group page says that if you do not submit the category, we might assign one for you
. That matches the attribute page, which says every product is automatically assigned a category and lists targeting of Google Ads campaigns among the cases where your own value can override it.
In practice: if you plan to split campaigns by category, submit the category yourself in google_product_category, so the groups follow your decision rather than an assignment you never saw.
Category, product type or custom label?
| Attribute | Good for | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Category | A consistent split that matches how Google sees products | Fixed list; not available in Performance Max outside the twelve countries |
| Product type | Mirroring your own store structure | Only as clean as the values you write |
| Custom label | Business groupings: margin, season, best sellers | Five labels, and you maintain them yourself |
Why a broad category makes a blunt campaign
Groups can only be as fine as the categories behind them. If half your catalog sits in Home & Garden and nothing deeper, splitting by category cannot separate kitchen knives (665) from blankets (1985), and they end up sharing a bid.
That is the practical case for choosing the most specific category that is still true. For a catalog, the Bulk Mapper assigns a specific ID to every row and flags the uncertain ones; the which products first guide helps decide where to start if the catalog is large.
Questions
Can I target Shopping ads by Google product category?
Yes. In a Shopping campaign you can subdivide product groups by category and bid on each group. Performance Max listing groups can also use category, but only in the twelve countries Google lists.
Should I structure Shopping campaigns by product type or by category?
Product type mirrors your own store structure and works everywhere. Category follows Google’s taxonomy and gives a consistent split. Many accounts use one for structure and custom labels for business groupings such as margin or season.
Why can I not subdivide my Performance Max listing groups by category?
Google only offers the category subdivision when the campaign targets the US, the UK, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands, Brazil, Norway, Sweden or Turkey. Elsewhere, use product type or custom labels.
